ONE OF THE elections I'm fascinated with this year is for ... Harvard's Board of Overseers.

Why, you say, should we non-Harvard types care about an election for the lesser of Harvard's two governing boards? Because two outspoken candidates are trying to storm the gates, arguing that the storied university needs to embrace free speech unambiguously, reform its disciplinary procedures, and focus more on its students.

And because what happens at Harvard doesn't stay at Harvard, but rather reverberates throughout the academic world.

Petition Candidates' Manifesto - Forbes.comMinimize

Harvey and Bob wrote, on March 23, 2009, a manifesto of sorts ("Meanwhile, At Harvard...") for their insurgent petition campaigns at Forbes.com. While they don't see eye-to-eye on every issue, their common ground is founded a commitment to being proactive overseers:

The governance of American higher education shouldn't be the sole province of overly compliant trustees, overbearing administrators and overloaded faculty. With our efforts in the April Overseers election, we hope to encourage all active alumni to give back by taking back their universities.
